This research investigates geophysical surveys and rescue excavations at the ancient site of Velem, aiming to identify subsurface features, determine the site’s boundaries, and understand the spatial structure of the cemetery. Magnetic surveying was designed and executed across three operational areas (A, B, and C), considering environmental conditions, topography, and technical constraints. In Area A, the maximum possible surface was covered using precise grid-laying, a total station, and a reference benchmark. In Area B, due to interference from electricity pylons, affected sections were excluded, concentrating data acquisition within a 50x40 meter area. Area C was surveyed using a handheld GPS to assess regions impacted by road construction. Magnetic survey results revealed numerous positive anomalies, likely reflecting buried graves and human cavities at depths of 50 to 100 centimeters. These patterns, particularly in the western and southern parts of the site, confirm the cemetery’s extent beyond the main mound. Excavations in 2021 uncovered 29 tomb-like structures, 29 skeletons, and 170 burial goods. These findings provide valuable insights into burial rituals, socioeconomic status, and the cultural history of ancient Mazandaran and Hyrcania in the east.
