Remote sensing and multitemporal satellite image analysis techniques were employed to monitor spatial changes and identify archaeological zones concealed within subsurface layers. The satellite images were analyzed comparatively with older datasets and the 2022 test excavation program to delineate the site’s extent and propose its protection buffer. This approach aimed to detect evidence of human-induced alterations, natural erosion, and coastal shifts.
Through spectral, structural, and morphological interpretation of the images, areas with high archaeological potential were extracted and mapped as preliminary site extent and buffer zone proposals. The results of the satellite interpretation were then verified with field data obtained from 22 excavation trenches and surface observations. The comparison demonstrated that most of the areas identified in the satellite imagery overlapped with the actual site extent, which includes port structures, industrial zones, and residential areas dating from the early to middle Islamic centuries.
Furthermore, the remote sensing analysis successfully identified communication pathways and potential cultural buffer areas associated with the heritage site. Therefore, the combined use of remote sensing and field investigation in this study provides an effective model for defining the extent and establishing the protective boundaries of historical coastal and harbor sites.
