Given the rapid pace of infrastructural development in Iran, the use of advanced technologies in rescue archaeology projects has become increasingly essential. This article aims to elucidate the scientific principles and methods of digital documentation and to present a systematic protocol for rescue excavations, emphasizing the necessity of employing digital technologies in such projects. Digital documentation techniques—including close-range photogrammetry, the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and the creation of virtual tours—have been implemented in rescue excavations at the Kangir Dam, Chandir Dam, Belubin Dam, and Seimareh Dam archaeological sites. These approaches enable the comprehensive and holistic recording and presentation of archaeological sites and excavation areas, serving as effective tools for multiple purposes such as tourism, heritage management, and education. Previous experiences demonstrate that the integration of technologies such as photogrammetry and virtual tours, in addition to ensuring high scientific accuracy, also facilitates the effective cultural and educational representation of archaeological remains. Finally, the article proposes the establishment of a “Digital Museum of Archaeological Achievements from Water and Power Projects” as a sustainable solution for the preservation and presentation of data generated through rescue archaeology projects.
